British building regulations: focus on slip resistance

This poster provides an overview of slip-resistance requirements when selecting flooring materials for outdoor areas. It identifies the three main tests and rating systems that are used to assess and measure slip resistance levels of different surface types and environments.

Focus on Slip Resistance

Choosing the right flooring materials for your project ensure less slips or falls and maximises the enjoyment of a space. There are three main ways of measuring a surface for slip resistance: ABC Ratings, R Ratings and Pendulum Test Values (PTVs).
What do these ratings mean and how do we assess them?

ABC Ratings: For floors in a barefoot environment

Ratings range from A to C. If a C rating is achieved, the surface will be more slip-resistant, perfect for use near wet environments such as pools.

R Ratings: For floors in a shod environment

Ratings range from R9 to R13. If an R13 rating is achieved, the surface has a high level of slip resistance, ideal for slopes and areas of high footfall.

Pendulum Test Values: Measuring slip resistance

Ratings range from 11 to 80. If a rating of 70+ is achieved, the surface is considered highly slip-resistant.

Conclusion

These are the most crucial elements to consider but more detail can be found in Document K. Please note that regulations are subject to change and it’s worth familiarising yourself with the Government’s ‘Approved Documents’ portal to keep yourself abreast of changes to building law.
